The Netherite Sword is one of the most powerful weapons in the game, and highly sought-after. Netherite Swords debuted in the Nether Update (v 1.16). The Netherite Sword has +8 attack damage (vs. +7 for diamond swords) and a durability of 2,031. That makes it both powerful and extremely long-lasting.
So how do you obtain one of these fantastic and powerful swords? It’s not easy, because Netherite swords are not simply created from sticks and ingots like other weapons in the game. It requires a little more effort, and quite a few trips into the Nether to gather all the necessary materials. The step-by-step guide below will show you how, and you’ll be killing off mobs with this powerful new sword very soon!
Step By Step Guide to Make a Netherite Sword
The first thing you need to know about Netherite swords (as well as all other Netherite weapons and tools) is that to make them, you must upgrade a diamond version of the same item by combining it with a Nether Ingot. Follow along to see how that is done.
- First, you’ll want a Diamond sword. When you upgrade to Netherite, the resulting sword will keep all the previous enchantments you had on the original Diamond version. The only enchant that will no longer work with Netherite is Mending. Otherwise, make sure you’ve got a fully enchanted Diamond Sword and your Netherite version will be ready to rock and roll once you finish these steps.
- To upgrade your diamond sword to Netherite, you’ll need one Netherite Ingot. To make a Netherite Ingot, you’ll need Netherite Scraps. And to make Netherite Scraps, you’ll need Ancient Debris? Sound complicated? Don’t worry. Just keep following these steps.
- Head deep into the Nether to begin mining for Ancient Debris. It’s very rare and found most often at y level 15 (and surrounding areas). Read the complete guide to mining for Ancient Debris for everything you need to know to find it fast.
- You’ll eventually need 4 Netherite Scraps to make a Netherite Ingot, and one Ancient Debris can be smelted into a single Netherite Scrap. So, you’ll need to keep mining for Ancient Debris until you find four blocks of it.
- Smelt your four blocks of Ancient Debris in a furnace to create four Netherite Scraps.
- Combine the four Netherite Scraps on a crafting table with four Gold Ingots to make a single Netherite Ingot.
- Now that you’ve got your original Diamond Sword and a Netherite Ingot, you’ll need to combine them on a Smithing Table to upgrade the sword to Netherite.
- If you don’t already have a Smithing Table, you can craft one using two Iron Ingots plus four wooden planks (any type of wood will work).
- Place your Diamond Sword and the Netherite Ingot on the Smithing Table and congratulations! You now have a Netherite Sword.
Armed with your fully-enchanted Netherite Sword, you’re ready to lay waste to any mobs that cross your path.
